This is a parallel with the idea that one must not eat the fruit of the dead in the underworld or else he or she would be trapped there. As the poem goes on, Persephone says that she wishes that she did not have to beg to eat. We find out later in the poem that The artist (assumed to be a parallel with Hades) is having Persephone pose nude for his paintings, which does not thrill Demeter (which is understandable, who would want their daughter posing nude for an artist to paint?). Demeter wants her daughter to be happy, but wonders if she really is.

It seems as though Demeter is not thrilled with this career choice and she wonders if Persephone is happy with conducting her life this way. Persephone arrives her mother asks her about her work, which we find out is posing for an artist to paint. It starts with Demeter waiting to meet with Persephone in a coffee shop (assumed from the title). The Bistro Styx comes from Demeter’s perspective and it portrays the story of Persephone in Hell with a kind of modern twist.
